What are the main types of filters?
Air filters.
These are components that are made of porous or fibrous materials. They remove various debris and contaminants such as dust, mould, bacteria, pollen. In diesel vehicles, these components are used to trap the water from the fuel. They have a bowl-like shape and water is accumulated at its bottom as its heavier than the fuel.
Diesel particulate filters (DPF).
Filters of this type can be found in diesel vehicles only. These components help to reduce harmful emissions discharged into the atmosphere.
There are some other types of filters can be found in vehicles depending on their model, year of production and configuration:
- positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) filters or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) filters, for instance.
- However, one should always remember that filters are consumables and have to be replaced at set intervals.
When is it time to change your Filter
Filter change intervals vary depending on the filter type and the driving conditions. This information is specified in the manual. On average, replacement intervals are the following:
- Intake (engine) air filters – every 25 000 km;
- Cabin air filters – 15 000 – 25 000 km, in some dusty places – only
- about 6 000 – 7 000 km;
- Oil filters – every 12 months or once in 10 000 – 15 000 km. Oil filters have to be changed along with the oil replacement.
- Fuel filters – have to be replaced once in about 45 000 – 55 000 km.
