How to Start a B&B

Starting a Bed and Breakfast takes an enormous amount of dedication and persistence. You need to understand the hospitality industry and how to manage a business. Running your own business can be incredibly stressful, and you need to be prepared for the challenges you may face.

The hospitality industry suffered a huge hit at the hands of the pandemic. There are different aspects to consider these days, like providing ample PPE for your staff. Your B&B should be a safe haven for guests to relax and feel safe in.

If you want to start a B&B, here are a few tips to get you started.

Is it right for you?

Before you start making any permanent decisions, really think about whether a B&B is right for you. Consider whether you can handle pressure, learn from your mistakes and enjoy the challenge. You need to be a people person and, preferably, have some experience within the hospitality industry. Think about self-employment and whether you can afford to take a risk with your financial stability. Do not rush into a new business adventure – you need to take your time with this decision.

Profitability and finances

When you are self-employed, it is your responsibility to arrange your taxes, pension contributions and insurance. You are in charge of your income, and you need to be smart about things. Ask a financial advisor for help if you are unsure of how to budget, invest and sort out your money. It’s nothing to be ashamed of – we all need a little help sometimes. Money management is an essential skill for a business owner, and you need to learn as much as you can about it – especially if you have employees.

Furnishings

Talk to a few hotel furniture suppliers to find the best deal possible. You need high-quality furniture that will withstand the test of time. Try to avoid investing in trend pieces that may look outdated in a few years.  A classic wooden bed, bedside table and chair will look great in five or even ten years. You can stylishly accent with soft furnishings, like pillows and bedsheets, that are much easier to switch up.

Which staff do I need to hire?

You need a team to help you run the B&B. You need a chef, a few waiters to run the ‘breakfast’ sector, and some cleaners to keep the rooms in good condition. Cleaning is especially important since the pandemic – all rooms should be thoroughly sanitised between each guest.

You may also need an accountant and business advisor to help you with the management side of things. A handyman will also come in useful for any maintenance and repair work on the property.

Start a new business adventure this year, and launch a B&B.
