Symptoms And Causes Of Hormonal Acne

Acne is a condition of the skin that occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads and blackheads, pimples and appears on the face. forehead, upper back, chest, and shoulders. It is common among teenagers, though it may affect people of all ages. Effective treatments are available at Healthy Remedies Australia, but hormonal acne can be persistent. The bumps and pimples heal slowly and when one begins to go away, others seem to crop up. Depending on the severity, acne may cause emotional distress and scar the skin. The earlier you start the treatment, the lower will be your risk of such problems.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of acne vary depending on the severity of the condition-

  • Whiteheads (closed clogged pores)
  • Blackheads (open clogged pores)
  • Small red, tender bumps (papules )
  • Pimples (pustules) – papules with pus at the tip
  • Nodules – large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin.
  • Cystic lesions – painful, pus-filled lumps below the surface of the skin.

When To See A Doctor?

If self-care remedies are not effective on your acne see your health care doctor. He or she may prescribe stronger medications. If still acne persists or a severe form, you may seek medical treatment from a Dermatologist. For many women, acne may persist for decades, with flares a week before menstruation. This acne type tends to clear up without treatment in women who use contraceptives.

In old adults, a sudden onset of severe acne may be a signal of an underlying disease requiring medical attention.

The (FDA) food and drug administration warned that some popular non prescription acne lotion or skin products and cleansers can cause a serious reaction. This reaction is quite rare so don’t confuse it with the redness and irritation or itchiness where you have applied the products. Seek emergency medical help if after using a skin product you experience –

  • Faintness
  • Breathing problem
  • Swelling of face, eyes, lips or tongue
  • Throat tightness

Causes Of Hormonal Acne

Four main factors cause acne –

  • Excess oil production
  • Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria
  • Excess activity of a type of hormone (androgens).

Acne appears on your face, forehead, chest, shoulders and upper back as these areas of skin have the most oil glands. Hair follicles are connected to oil glands. The follicle wall may bulge and produce a white head. The plug may be open to the surface and darken, causing a blackhead. Blackheads may look like dirt stuck, actually, the pore is congested with oil and bacteria which turns brown when exposed to air.

Pimples are raised red spots with a white center that develops when blocked hair follicles become infected or inflamed. Blockages and inflammation develop deep inside hair follicles producing cyst like lumps below the skin surface. Other pores in the skin which are the openings of the sweat glands are not usually involved in acne.

Risk Factors

  • Age – people of all ages may get acne, but it is more common in teenagers.
  • Hormonal Changes – Hormonal changes are common in teenagers, girls, and women and people using certain medications including those containing corticosteroids, lithium, or androgens.
  • Family History – Genetics play a major role in acne. If both parents are having acne, the child is likely to develop it also.
  • Greasy or Oily Substances – Acne may be developed when the skin comes in contact with oily lotions and creams or with grease in a workplace, such as a kitchen with fry vats.
  • Stress – stress doesn’t cause acne but if someone already has acne then it may make it worse.

Hormonal acne may be mild or severe but you can consult a dermatologist for proper treatment and get it cured.
