Structured Cabling for Your Commercial Telecom Needs – It’s All About the Service

The area of telecoms and communications is probably bigger than it’s ever been before, certainly when it comes to business! Nearly every transaction or interaction relies upon your hardware and, or software doing what it’s supposed to do, when you need it to, although, as with life, there are always hiccups. Hiccups happen, however, how they are dealt with is a different matter altogether and, as a business owner, you’ll know that a solution is music to your ears, a problem is well, more of a drone;

Re-inventing the wheel?

When it comes to commercial telecoms and structured cabling, technologies have improved and evolved since the introduction of traditional phone lines, dial up internet connection systems and internal – local communication networks. But, has it really changed that much? Probably not but, with so many companies promoting their tech services these days it can be easy to feel that things are changing faster than it’s possible to keep up with. Always keep in mind how long it took for somebody to reinvent the wheel…

What’s important?

The most important thing to remember when being bombarded with ads and new service offerings is that most of the products will, roughly speaking, be very similar, if not the same. The biggest change for your business telecoms systems is in the form of the infrastructure that is available these days, you have the luxury of having things like super-fast, digital fibre optic broadband to aid your company’s growth which you may or may not already have set up anyway.

There are a couple of questions to ask yourself or, to know the answers to when it comes to your telecom infrastructure. Most business owners won’t know the answers off the top of their heads and that’s fine, but you should find out.

  • How is everything connected? – No matter how straightforward, or complex your needs are, you should know what is being used to connect your hardware. If you already have fibre optic broadband installed, then take a look at the cabling and router provided by your ISP. Usually, they are cheap and very basic which doesn’t make a lot of sense in terms of tech when you are paying for a super-fast, low latency, high bandwidth two-way communication ‘pipeline’.
  • How can you improve your system’s value for money?When it comes to communication networks, you want as little interference as possible and the network should have as few components as possible in terms of connections. One of the best ways to achieve this is to ensure that the wiring, or cables that connect your devices are of good quality, are ‘shielded’ and are the correct length.

Think of insulation for your home, cable shielding works in a similar way, as do the quality of the connectors that plug into your devices. Poor quality cabling is kind of like turning your air con on and leaving your windows open – pointless.

Talk is cheap

Nobody has reinvented the wheel, it’s just a big market so everybody’s fighting for space. Remember, keep it simple, focus on quality and the support that is promised. Knowing that dedicated, knowledgeable, and efficient help is at hand is better than having the best tech in the world with no one to turn to if it goes wrong.
