Shower Filter – Everything You must Know

  • Does your water have a “pool water smell”?
  • Are you often caught in a habitual body scratching session immediately after bath or minutes after?
  • Is your family experiencing one or more skin infections?

Chances are that you’ve been bathing or and showering with chlorinated water. Or your water source contains chloramine (ah…the mambo jumbo, forgive me). Either way, I have just figured out this best shower filter for you. Don’t know what a shower filter is?

No worries, I have discussed everything you need to know about it below. Get started.

So, What Is A Shower Filter?

Say after me; a shower filter is a filtration system attached to your shower head/shower arm to get rid of skin-harming substances from your water. Yes, it’s that simple. But trust me, these portable ball-like systems will save your skin from the activities of two harmful substances namely chlorine and chloramine. Chlorine or chloramine or both are added to water by your city’s municipal water treatment center for water disinfection. But while that may be good news, both of these chemical substances penetrate into the skin to relieve it of its natural protective oil. Leaving your skin dry and unprotected, chlorinated water agitates several skin problems such as acne, rashes, blemishes, irritation of sensitive skin, itchiness, dryness, and more. Chlorinated water is also a threat to healthy hair. It decolors the hair, causes split ends and dandruff while it also causes dry, itchy scalp.

How Do Shower Filters Work

The working architecture of shower filters is quite simple. A shower filter, which is like a cartridge attached to the showerhead or shower arm or both, integrates KDF to perform its purpose eliminating water contaminants like chlorine and chloramine from your shower water. KDF (kinetic degradation fluxion) is a granular zinc alloy that reacts with waterborne contaminants through oxidation, converting heavy metals and chlorine into harmless materials that don’t irritate the skin or cause any form of skin problem. KDF is also bacteriostatic, which means it prevents the growth of bacteria in every form from growing inside your shower. Meanwhile, there is another type of shower filter which uses carbon. Scientifically, carbon filters are just as effective as KDF filters are. The only difference between the two is that carbon filters degrade on the continuous filtration of high-temperature water. That is the more reason filter users use carbon filters only for drinkable water which is to be consumed cold while KDF filters are most common for shower water filtration.

How Long Does A Shower Filter Last?

Well, there’s no fixed lifespan for all shower filters. It depends more on your manufacturer and how often you use your shower filter. Some shower filters are rated at 15, 000gallons. This means that the manufacturer recommends a replacement of the said filter after it must have filtered a total of 15, 000gallons of water. But keeping track of how many gallons of water your filter has filtered so far can be daunting. The only way to confirm if your shower filter is due for a replacement is by noticing a change in your skin health. Immediately you start noticing skin irritation, dryness, and the rest of that, it’s likely that your filter is no longer functional.
