Few things in life are as important as a good night’s sleep. When you sleep, your cells are rejuvenated, your brain can process the events of the day and prepare for the next, your organs relax, your body heals, your food is processed, and your body can ward off anxiety and depression.
It is recommended that the average adult gets between seven and nine hours of sleep a day. Do you sleep well every night? Would you like to improve the quality of your sleep? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then you may find that the following tips are helpful.
1. Turn Off The Screens
Your body naturally seeks out darkness when it is time to go to sleep. The blue lights of the screen confuse the body and they make your body forget that it is time to go to sleep. If you go to bed looking at a screen, your body will be riled up, and you will not be able to get a good night’s sleep. If you are a person who likes to look at social media before you go to sleep to relax, why not get books from the library. You can read fiction or nonfiction books to go to sleep, or you could even get magazines and books that have to do with your preferred hobbies. Reading books is not only good for your brain, but it is also relaxing. For better sleep quality at night, turn off the screen a few hours before you hit the sack, and read books instead of scrolling through social media in the bed.
2. Try Aromatherapy
Smells can be highly influential on your sleep quality. Some smells can awaken the senses like peppermint, and other smells can make the body sleepy such as lavender and chamomile. There are various ways that you can expose your body to relaxing smells at night. You may choose to use a diffuser with essential oils, or you could use a sleep inhaler with essential oil drops. When you take in calming smells at night, you will feel calmer and at ease, and you may be able to sleep longer and deeper.
3. Try Melatonin
Your body uses melatonin naturally at night. It is a hormone that is released and it helps your body with its natural sleep cycle. Melatonin can be used in a pill or gummy form to help you go to sleep. Many people take sleeping pills that help them to sleep at night, but they can often have bad side effects and they can be addicting. Even though natural treatments can have side effects as well, melatonin is easy on the body, and has little, if any, side effects for most people. As true with any supplement or vitamin, you do well to consult your doctor before you begin taking melatonin.
4. Take Magnesium
Magnesium is a natural element that is found in the body and it is known to calm the body. Magnesium increases GABA in the body, and when GABA is low, it can be difficult for your body to relax. Magnesium is also important when it comes to your immune system. It is the element that helps your immune system to quiet and calm down as well. Many people do not get enough magnesium in their systems, and there are various ways that you can take this element. You can take magnesium in powder form and add it to a drink at night. You can take a magnesium supplement orally, or you can also bathe in Epsom salts, which are magnesium, at night.
