Many people upgrade from Windows 8 or 8.1 to Windows 10 and got this problem of slow startup. Also some people get this problem in the clean install. For some people, this process may take more than one minute. The symptoms for these errors are as follows

Fix 1: Enable / disable the quick Start-up

We mainly can fix the slow startup speed of Windows 10 by disabling fast boot of Windows 10’s. To do this, click the Start Menu and start typing “ power options ” and select Power Options when it appears. In the window Power Options, select ” Choose what the power button does ” from the left options panel.

Next at the top click on the text “ Change windows settings that are currently unavailable “. You may be asked to enter a password of your computer to do this. Now scroll down to Shut-down settings. Uncheck ” Turn on fast start-up ” and click Save changes. When you next switch on your computer, you should immediately see a boot time significantly cuts. With Acer laptop, boot time dropped to 80 seconds. So this simple change is enough to get the Windows 10 out of its sluggish start.

Fix 2: Updating and using latest Graphics Drivers

This second fix works on most of the Windows 10 PC. Sometime the Graphic Drivers that you are using are old and outdated. So you need to update or download a new and latest driver to fix slow Windows startup. Just open the device manager by pressing “Window key + x” and selecting Device manager.

An easy way to verify whether this fix will help just disable the driver of Nvidia and AMD graphics and reboot your computer. Click on Display Adapters and choose AMD graphic or Nvidea and right click and choose disable.

Shut down your computer (not a reboot) and on again to see if this has fixed the problem. If you are using Intel HD Graphics there is no need to do this. If it is your graphics card that is causing the problem, re-activate the graphics card using the steps above, and then download the latest version of the drivers from your card manufacturer sites – www.amd.com/drivers or www.nvidia.com/drivers. If you are not sure which driver to download, just select the option to automatically find the card you are using. Once the driver is downloaded and installed, shut down and restart your computer to see if the problem has been resolved.

If you have an AMD graphics card, there is another step you can try. Go to the Start menu and type Run. In the Run command type”regedit” and press enter. Open regedit and click on the Edit button at the top of the screen, then click on Find. Type and search “EnableULPS” by clicking “Find Next“. EnableULPS will be found in the list as shown below.

Double-click on it, and change the value from 1 to 0. This will disable power-saving feature and turns off the dedicated graphics card when it is not needed. This mean that your laptop will consumes more battery power, so only do this if your laptop spends most of its time plugged in.

Last fix: If Nothing works then

If none of the solutions works for you then you have many other choices.

Choice 1: Repair startup

Insert the USB or CD of Windows 10 and go to advance repair and select startup repair. You can also try other repair options.

Choice 2: Downgrade back to Window 8/8.1/7 or Reset

You can downgrade back to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 (if you install Windows 10 less than a month ago), or restore Windows 10 to its default settings, removing all files and your programs. To do this, search for the “reset” in the Start Menu and click on this computer Reset, then Start if you want to reset the Windows 10 Start or other options if you want to downgrade to Windows 8 or 7.
Note: If you’re going to do a complete reset Windows 10, make sure that all your files are backed up as they will all be lost during reset.

Some precautions and tips

  1. Before doing anything new please make a backup of your PC.
  2. You can also make a restore point.
  3. Always keep the Windows installation or recovery disk ready.
  4. Don’t install any software that goes in the startup folder of windows. Disable the useless auto startup software from the Task manager –> Start-up.
  5. Never power off your computer without proper shutdown.
  6. Update the graphics related software.
