10 Competencies That Will Be Required In 2020

We live in an era when the rapid development of technologies such as artificial intelligence, robots, nanotechnology, 3D printing, affect the requirements for knowledge and skills of the workforce. The fourth industrial revolution is changing the conditions in which people work, and you need to be prepared for them. Forecasts in the field of development and changes in those competencies that we will see in the coming years continue to be monitored.

The forecast that you will read in the article below is quite global and belongs to the analysts of the World Economic Forum. It seems that it deserves special attention. Analysts predict that 35% of key required competencies will change. Let us take a closer look at these changes.

Must-have skills in 2020

Decisions will be made by machines using data assets. However, robots do not yet have creative thinking that can generate new ideas, because creativity is a must-have skill for almost everyone in 2020, but first things first.

1. The ability to solve complex problems. But at the same time, the need for owners of such competence will increase by 52%.

2. Critical thinking. This competency is also among the key ones in the forecasts for 10-15 years. Due to the abundance and easy access to information, the skills of its selection, the correct rethinking will be necessary. Unfortunately, the modern school is not the best assistant in this matter, because often the only true answer technology prevails (tests). Therefore, its development will fall on the shoulders of parents, and then employers.

3. Creativity. Its value will increase by 7 points Complicating processes requires innovative solutions. Unfortunately, this is also not taught in modern schools (and in many universities).

4. Competence of people management. This is likely to happen due to the growing importance of the three previous competencies, as well as the increasing requirements for technical, computer literacy. Many companies will go to splicing human and artificial intelligence, combining the efforts of people and robots, so the environment will become more complex. The ability to work with people, especially taking into account the fact that many of them will be even more highly developed than today, will continue to remain an important task.

5. Coordination and interaction skills. According to Russian forecasts, the significance of this competency is slightly higher.

6. Emotional intelligence. It should be noted that in the list of critical competencies of previous years, it is not at all, although today many companies invest in the development of empathy among their employees. It is worth noting that this is one of the areas of development that is popular in many large organizations.

7. Judgment and decision-making. In an increasingly complex world, decisions will need to be made quickly. Not only quality but also the speed of decision-making will be important. Interestingly, just the other day a friend shared the story that her colleague bought a new (very expensive) bag of a well-known brand as part of the show, which had not yet gone on mass sale and went with it to China. Two Chinese went there for three days, bought with a double margin, and what was her surprise in the morning when she saw a Chinese-made bag on sale in a nearby (non-branded) store (since she was satisfied with the quality, she just bought herself a “fake” and went home). The tale is very cautionary.

8. Service orientation. In this competency, it will be extremely difficult without the development of emotional intelligence; these are very interrelated issues.

9. Ability to negotiate. It seems that this is due to the growing demand for new competencies.

10. Cognitive flexibility. It was not there before, but in an open, large, very polyvariant world, this ability will be really important. Owning it, we can apply our creativity and complex problems solving.

Active listening and quality control completely disappeared from the list of previous years, giving way to emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility.

Within the Future of Employment research, managers interviewed more than 350 employers in nine industries in the 15 largest economies in the world to predict in which direction technological advances will push labor market development. Some professions will disappear, others will develop, and those that do not even exist now will become common. To succeed in other professions, you will have to master new skills.

How to prepare for the changes of the future

In almost every aspect of life, the requirements for the skills and knowledge of employees will change. Enterprises that intend to keep up with the fourth industrial revolution will have to assist their employees in adaptation to new conditions. Those who will put talent in the first place will be able to achieve success. Using data analysis, HR capabilities, we will know how to keep up and be prepared. Also, the diversity of the workforce will become an important component, and the blurring of geographical boundaries and the ability to work remotely will allow you to collaborate with talented people from any spot of the Earth.
