I am very fond of learning new things. Today I learned about supercomputers, which I am going to share it with you. The supercomputers are the computers with very high capacity and memory that can process trillions of data and processes per second. Now talking about my computer which can transfer few GB's of files to pendrive in about half an hour. Which is not fine with me. I want a supercomputer. Yes seriously, but I can't afford it. Forget about it, Let us learn about supercomputers. Here we go.
Tianhe-2 also known as Milky way 2 is made by China at Chinese National University of Defense Technology and is popularly known as fastest supercomputer in the world. It resides at National Supercomputer Center, Guangzhou, China. The measured speed of Tianhe-2 is about 33,862 teraflops to 33.9 petaflops means quadrillions of calculations/second with 1,375 Tebibyte(equals to 1.099 terabyte) of memory. Tianhe-2 Supercomputer runs with a combinations of different processors some of these are Intel Xeon E5 processors and Intel Xeon Phi co-processors. It has more than 3 million processor and accelerator cores. It was developed by a team of 1,300 scientists and engineers and is operating with Kylin Linux operating system.
Titan SupercomputerTitan comes second in the list of fastest supercomputers. This supercomputer resides at U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and used for research into nuclear energy ,climate change, bio fuels, materials science, fuel combustion, chemistry simulations and meteorology etc. The measured speed of Titan is about 17,590 teraflops or 17.6 petaflops with the memory of 693.5 Tibibyte. This runTitan uses a total of 561,000 Opteron 6274 16-core 2.2GHz processors along with NVIDIA GPU (Graphics Processor Units). Titan is operating with Cray Linux Environment.
Sequoia is the third fastest supercomputer in the world which is developed by IBM for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)as part of the Advanced Simulation and Computing Program (ASC). It resides at Lawrence Liver-more National Laboratory (LLNL) in California (USA). The measured speed of Sequoia is about 17,173 teraflops or 17.2 petaflops and has about 1.6 million 16-core processors. Its memory is 1.5 Pebibytes and is operating with CNK operating system.
K Computer Supercomputer
K Computer is the ranked fourth in list of supercomputers. K computer is situated at Japan’s RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (RAICS). The measured speed of K Computer is about 10,510 teraflops or 10 petaflops. It is also the best energy-efficient systems with 705,000 SPARC64 VIIIfx octo-core processors, K computer (Japan) performs scientific operations including meteorology, space science, global disaster prevention, running simulations for weather forecasting, pharmacological research, Computational Science, and research in medical. Its operating system is Linux.
Mira is the fifth fastest supercomputer which is developed by IBM. Mira is situated at Argonne National Laboratory, US and is operated by the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, just outside Chicago. Mira uses IBM’s BlueGene/Q platform with 786,000 core processors. The measured speed of Mira is about 8,596 teraflop or 8.59 petaflops and consumes 2176.58 megaflops per watt. Mira operating system is CNK with a memory of 768 Tibibyte.
Other supercomputers which ranks in top 10 are:
- Trinity supercomputer resides at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The measured speed of Trinity is about 8,100 teraflops with memory of 6 Petabyte.
- Hazel Hen supercomputer is residing at University of Stuttgart’s Germany. The measured speed of Hazel Hen is about 5,640 teraflop.
- Shaheen II supercomputer resides at Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Saudi Arabia. The measured speed of Shaheen II is about 5,537 terflops ans has 196,608 Intel Xeon E5 processor cores
- Stampede supercomputer is situated at University of Texas U.S.. The measured speed of Stampede is about 5.16 petaflop or 5,186 teraflops.
- JUQUEEN supercomputer resides at Germany. The measured speed of JUQUEEN is about
- Piz Daint supercomputer has the measured speed of Piz Daint is about 6,271 teraflops and uses 73,808 Nvidia Tesla GPU cores, which acts like accelerators.
